José Abelardo Quiñones Gonzales (born April 22, 1914 in Pimentel , Peru , † July 23, 1941 Quebrada Seca, Ecuador ) was a Peruvian aviator and is a Peruvian national hero.

Life

José Abelardo Quiñones Gonzales was born as the third of four children to the married couple José María Quiñones Arízola and María Juana Rosa Gonzales Orrego in Pimentel, a fishing village in the Lambayeque region . In 1935 he was a cadet in the Peruvian Air Force , trained as a fighter pilot and promoted to Alférez ( sub lieutenant ) in 1939 .

On July 23, 1941, during the Peruvian-Ecuadorian War , he died in an attack on the Ecuadorian base of Quebrada Seca. When his fighter-bomber was hit by the Ecuadorian air defense , he decided not to jump with the parachute , but to steer his plane with the bomb load into the target.

Afterlife

His remains were buried on September 22, 1961 in the "Plaza de Armas de la Base Aérea de Las Palmas" in Lima . On May 10, 1966, Capitan José Quiñones was declared a Peruvian national hero by the Peruvian President Fernando Belaúnde Terry . The anniversary of his death is celebrated as Peruvian Air Force Day.

The current ten Nuevos Soles note shows a portrait of José Quiñones on the front. The editions up to and including 2006 also included an airplane flying on its back on the back, which represents the death of the pilot. Since the current edition (2009), Machu Picchu has been printed on the back of the ten Nuevos Soles note.
