Travel Service was founded in 1997. 2001 the first subsidiary Travel Service Hungary followed in Budapest ; Smart Wings was founded in 2004 as a low-cost airline based in Prague . Travel Service has also had a subsidiary in Slovakia since 2010, Travel Service Slovakia of the same name .

Travel Service flies to over 250 airports a year and in 2008 transported 2.3 million passengers. Travel Service was a subsidiary of Icelandair which held 50.08% of the company. The company has belonged to the Unimex Group since February 2013; CEFC China Energy holds a minority stake of 49.92%.

In August 2013 Travel Service canceled the order for a single Boeing 787-8 in favor of a new order for three smaller Boeing 737 MAXs . At the beginning of 2017, the order was expanded to a total of eight machines.

In 2018 Travel Service was integrated into the subsidiary SmartWings .

Over the years Travel Service has founded several subsidiaries, including its branches in neighboring countries, Travel Service Slovakia , Travel Service Hungary and Travel Service Polska, as well as the Czech low-cost airline SmartWings .
