Noregs Mållag
Noregs Mållag is a Norwegian association headquartered in Oslo that is committed to promoting Nynorsk as a written language and the use of dialect in all areas of the spoken language.
history
The association was founded on April 4th – 5th. February 1906 in Kristiania (today Oslo) under the name Norigs Maallag . This notation was retained until 1922. Today's Nynorsk was still called Landsmaal (language of the country / rural area) at that time . The renaming in Nynorsk (New Norwegian) took place in 1929 by a resolution of the Norwegian parliament, the Storting . The main concern when it was founded was that one of the exams for the Examen artium, the Norwegian Abitur, should be written in Nynorsk (Landsmaal). Only one day after it was founded, the Venstre party included the proposal in its election program at its national assembly, which also took place in Kristiania. In 1907 a corresponding law was passed. Until the founding of the association, the Det Norske Samlaget publishing house acted as the political voice of the language activists.
Since the 1910s, local Noregs Mållag organizations have sprung up across the country. During the Second World War, many of these local associations were dissolved and the club's chairman, Knut Markhus, arrested. After the war, the association had to struggle with the fact that many Norwegian municipalities abandoned Nynorsk as their main language form. In terms of language policy, the association was split on the question of whether to stick to the traditional form of Nynorsk or to bring it closer to Bokmål. The dispute led to the resignation of the Vestmannalaget group, which was committed to traditional spelling in 1962 .
In the 1970s, the association advocated the sole use of Nynorsk as a written language. In recent years, the association's language policy has instead increasingly focused on the view of Nynorsk as part of the country's linguistic diversity.
organization
At the local level, Noregs Mållag is divided into 20 provincial groups (Fylkeslag) and around 160 local groups. A nationwide meeting is held once a year. The association, including the youth organization, Norsk Målungdom , has around 12,000 members. Magne Aasbrenn has been its chairman since 2016 .
