Adam-Nicolas Gascon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adam-Nicolas Gascon (born March 14, 1623 in Liège ; buried July 10, 1668 there ) was a composer and choir director in the Principality of Liège .

Archive entries confirm that Gascon was choir regent (Maître de chant) at the Basilica of Our Lady from 1644 to September 1658 , which was then still a collegiate church in Maastricht . From 1659 to 1668 he was Kapellmeister at the collegiate church Saint-Paul in Liège, today Saint-Paul Cathedral . Only one of his works, a sonata for four voices and bc, has stood the test of time. Along with the compositions by Lambert Pietkin and Carl Rosier, this work is an early example of an Italian-style sonata in the Prince Diocese of Liège. In the sonata, Gascon used a dialogue of syncope motifs and echo effects, which alternate in fast and slow parts of the sentence. The manuscript of the sonata is in the library of the Liège Conservatory.
