Balma de la Margineda

The Balma de la Margineda (also called Balma Margineda) is a prehistoric abri south of the village of Santa Coloma d'Andorra on the border of the towns of Sant Julià de Lòria and Andorra la Vella in the south of Andorra . The site was discovered in 1959 by archaeologist Pere Canturri Montanya and explored from 1979 to 1991 by archaeologists Jean Guilaine , Michel Martzluff and Michel Barbaza.

The entrance is 970 m above sea level and around 30 m above the right bank of the Valira . The Abri is 20 m long and up to 7.0 m deep.

The sedimentary layers range from the Epipalaeolithic to the Neolithic . The epipalaeolithic layers are more than 10,000 years old and form the oldest trace of man in Andorra.

The Abri is a "bé d'interès cultural" under monument protection .
