Anthony Canty (born February 12, 1991 in Berlin ) is a German basketball player . Canty switched to the youth teams of the German first division club Eisbären Bremerhaven at the age of 16 . From 2009 onwards he was also given more and more time with the men's team and with the cooperation partner Cuxhaven BasCats in the second division ProA . After Canty had already played for various youth and junior national teams in the past, he was part of the extended squad of the German national team in 2012 . In the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons Canty played for TBB Trier in the basketball league.

Career

Canty learned to play basketball in his hometown at BG Zehlendorf and TuS Lichterfelde , with whose U16 selection he became German champion in 2007. Canty then moved in 2007 to the "Basketball-Akademie-Nordsee" of the Bundesliga club from Bremerhaven and played for its youth team in the youth basketball league (NBBL) and for the U18 junior national team , which in the 2009 European Championship finals, however, over did not come out an eleventh place.

By means of a double license , Canty had his first short appearances in the first division team of the polar bears in the basketball league 2009/10 . After he had outgrown the NBBL team, he played in the ProA 2010/11 for the polar bear cooperation partner BasCats from Cuxhaven in the second-highest German division. Due to the double license he was still a member of the first division squad, where he was used in almost half of the season's games for an average of ten minutes per game. In the 2011/12 basketball Bundesliga , Canty's performance stagnated with the polar bears, who also missed the championship play-offs for the first time in two years . Nevertheless, Canty received an invitation from the then national coach Svetislav Pesic to the national team's training camp in the summer of 2012. After the Bremerhaven -based team failed to make it into the play-offs again in the 2012/13 basketball Bundesliga , Canty moved to league rivals TBB in Trier for the following season .

After a successful summer 2013, when Canty took part in the Universiade in Kazan as part of the A2 national team, the preparation for the season seemed to be going perfectly. However, the young Neu-Trier missed the start of the season due to a shoulder injury. After a long rehab, Canty was able to reintegrate into the squad after a few months. Another shoulder injury unfortunately led to an early season. Despite the bad luck with injuries, the TBB continued to stand by its talented point guard, who signed a long-term contract in Trier.

At the beginning of the 2015/2016 season, Canty was signed by Hamburg Towers . There he played in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA under coach Hamed Attarbashi , with whom the playmaker had already worked in Bremerhaven. In the 2016/17 season Canty was the best thrower in Hamburg with an average of 15.3 points per use. Statistically, this was also the best year of his time in Hamburg.

In summer 2018 he returned to Bremerhaven and thus back to the first division, but had to accept relegation to the Bundesliga at the end of the 2018/19 season. Canty played 32 league games for the polar bears during the season and posted 3.5 points per game. He went to the 2nd ProA basketball league with the polar bears. Canty scored an average of 7.5 points per game over the course of the 2019/20 season and was in second place in the table with the team under the direction of coach Michael Mai when the season in mid-March 2020 due to the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus ended prematurely.

He moved to SBB Baskets Wolmirstedt in the Regionalliga Nord during the 2020 summer break .
