Max Montana (* 11. January 1996 in New York City as Max Hoetzel Montana ) is a German / American basketball player.

career

Montana, who is a US and German citizen , was born in New York and moved to California with his family when he was two . He played basketball at Calabasas High School, California, and Wilbraham & Monson Academy, Massachusetts , before studying at Indiana University in 2014 . He played 31 games for Indiana's basketball team in the 2014/15 season (2.4 points average).

In 2015, the winger moved to San Diego State University , sat out in the 2015/16 season and played a total of 55 games in the following two seasons. With averages of 7.7 points and 3.8 rebounds per use as well as 52 three-point throws, the 2016/17 season was the best year of his university days. In the spring of 2018, Montana decided to switch to professional life and forego a fourth year of college.

In summer 2018 he signed his first contract as a professional basketball player with the German first division club Gießen 46ers . He was used by the Central Hesse in 13 Bundesliga games and came to mean values ​​of 5.5 points and 1.4 rebounds per encounter.

At the beginning of February 2019, Montana switched to the second division Hamburg Towers . With the hamburgers he won the championship title in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA as well as promotion to the Bundesliga. On average, he scored 8.4 points and four rebounds per encounter

In autumn 2019, Montana took part in the draft process for the upcoming NBA G-League season. In the third round he was in 68th place of the team Greensboro Swarm , the farm team of the Charlotte Hornets selected. He played 16 games for Greensboro in the 2019/20 season, which was shortened due to the spread of COVID-19 , and averaged 3.7 points and 1.8 rebounds per use.

Personal

In 2017 he changed his maiden name Max Hoetzel to Max Montana. He already had the name Montana as a middle name. His parents, who met during a motorcycle tour through the United States, gave him and his sisters this middle name because they had a crush on the US state of Montana . He decided to change the name because there were always problems with the pronunciation of the name Hoetzel. Even he could not pronounce the name correctly, he told The San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper in September 2017 .

Montana is descended from a Danish mother (Heidi) and a German father (Holger) who emigrated to the USA. Montana has German and US citizenship.
