The Monegasque euro coins are those of Monaco in circulation Euro coins of the common European currency Euro .
Legal basis and scope of the coining rights
Although Monaco is not a member of the European Union, a bilateral currency agreement with the French Republic - on behalf of the European Community - stipulated on December 24, 2001 that Monaco may mint its own euro coins up to 1/500 of the French minting quota. On January 31, 2011, the European Commission recommended renegotiations with the Principality of Monaco, which led to a new currency agreement on October 13, 2012. It stipulates that the upper limit in terms of value for the annual issue of euro coins by the Principality of Monaco is composed of:
- a variable portion equal to the average number of coins issued per capita in the French Republic in the previous year, multiplied by the population of the Principality of Monaco, and
- a fixed part, the initial amount of which for 2012 is set at EUR 2,340,000. This fixed percentage can be re-determined each year to take into account both French inflation in the previous year and any significant developments in the euro collector's coin market.
Similar agreements have also been made with three other small European states ( San Marino , Vatican City and Andorra ). These currency agreements were considered necessary because these countries were in a currency union with Italy or France and Spain before the introduction of the euro.
