The Italian euro coins are in Italy in circulation Euro coins of the common European currency Euro . On January 1, 1999, Italy joined the euro zone , which made the introduction of the euro valid as the future currency.
Circulation coins
The Italian coins are minted in the “Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato” in Rome. The minting began in September 1999, but the coins minted from 1999 to 2002 were given the year of first issue 2002.
All Italian euro coins have a different motif, but all show a famous building or work of art as the theme. All designs contain the twelve stars of the EU, the year of issue and the overlapping letters RI for Repubblica Italiana (Italian Republic). Each coin was designed by a different artist.
The eight motifs of the Italian euro coins are:
- 1 cent: The Castel del Monte , a 13th century castle in Apulia , designed by Eugenio Driutti .
- 2 cents: The Mole Antonelliana , a tower symbolizing the city of Turin , designed by Luciana De Simoni .
- 5 cents: The Colosseum in Rome , a famous ancient building, designed by Ettore Lorenzo Frapiccini .
- 10 cents: A head from The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli , designed by Claudia Momoni .
- 20 Cent: The sculpture Unique forms of continuity in space by Umberto Boccioni , design by Maria Angela Cassol .
- 50 cents: The equestrian statue of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, created around 165, with the capitol pavement by Michelangelo , design by Roberto Mauri .
- 1 euro: The Vitruvian Man , a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci , design by Laura Cretara .
- 2 euros: Portrait of Dante Alighieri , detail of the wall fresco "Disput about the Sacrament" created by Raphael in 1509/10 in the Stanza della Segnatura of the Apostolic Palace , design by Maria Carmela Colaneri .
The front of the euro coins, which was redesigned from 2007 onwards (new map of Europe), was only introduced in Italy in 2008.
