The Dutch euro coins are in the Netherlands in circulation Euro coins of the common European currency Euro . On January 1, 1999, the Netherlands joined the euro zone , which decided to introduce the euro as a future means of payment.
Circulation coins
First mint series (1999-2013)
All coins are minted in the Dutch “ Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt ” mint in Utrecht . The Dutch euro coins have two different motifs, both showing the portrait of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and designed by Bruno Ninaber van Eyben . All coins show the twelve stars of the EU, the year of issue and the inscription BEATRIX KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN . In contrast to most of the other euro countries, the coins are actually minted. Furthermore, all coins bear the symbol of the Dutch mint, the cadre , and that of the incumbent mint master.
- Bow and arrow - mint master Chris van Draanen (1988–1999)
- Bow and arrow with star - Vacancy under Erik J. van Schouwenburg (2000)
- Fruit-bearing vine - mint master Robert Bruens (2001)
- Fruit-bearing vine with a star - vacancy under Maarten Brouwer (2001–2002)
- Sails of the three-masted clipper "Nederland" - mint master Maarten T. Brouwer (since 2003)
In the case of the cent coins, these can be seen to the right and left of the year of issue. On the 1 and 2 euro coins, the mint mark is under the words KONINGIN DER and that of the mint master under NEDERLANDEN .
Since 2007 all current coins have been minted with the newly designed front. The national backs of the first series do not fully correspond to the design guidelines of the European Commission from 2008. Among other things, the European stars should be arranged on the national side like on the European flag - in particular, they should be evenly distributed in a circle. This is not the case with the coins with the image of Queen Beatrix.

According to surveys by the Dutch website Eurodiffusie.nl , the proportion of euro coins with a Dutch reverse side in the Netherlands was around 30% in 2009. At the same time, around 25% of the coins came from the much larger neighboring country of Germany, which is also equipped with a correspondingly larger number of coins . The share of Belgian euro coins was around 15%.
1 and 2 cent coins
The 1 and 2 cent coins are almost never used in the Netherlands, as cash payments are rounded up or down to 5 cents. This was already the case at the time of the guilder , when the 1-cent coin was officially abolished in 1980. These coins are no longer accepted in general trade, but remain valid and are still accepted in some other EURO member countries (e.g. Germany and France).
Second embossing series (from 2014)
Willem-Alexander has been King of the Netherlands since Queen Beatrix abdicated on April 30, 2013 . Linked to this is the redesign of the Dutch euro coins and thus also the implementation of the applicable design guidelines.
The direction of view of the ruler on the coin images, to the right or left, tends to alternate with each change of the Dutch throne. The profile of King Willem-Alexander was designed by Erwin Olaf .
