The Latvian euro coins are in Latvia in circulation Euro coins of the common European currency Euro . Since the letter combination “eu” does not exist in Latvian , the euro is written “Eiro” in Latvia. Latvia has been a member of the euro area since 2014 ; Since January 15, 2014, the euro has been the only valid means of payment in Latvia. Before that, the lats was a means of payment.
Introduction history
On April 29, 2005, Latvia joined the European Community's Exchange Rate Mechanism . Latvia wanted to introduce the euro back in 2008 - but this had to be postponed due to the financial crisis. On March 5, 2013, Latvian Finance Minister Andris Vilks submitted the official application to join the euro in Brussels. He asked for the necessary test report from the EU Commission on euro readiness. On June 5, 2013, after the convergence report was available, the EU Commission recommended that Latvia be admitted to the euro zone on January 1, 2014. Despite doubts about the convergence report, the ECOFIN Council of Finance Ministers on July 9, 2013 confirmed Latvia's accession as the 18th Member of the Eurozone. In a press release on December 31, 2013, the European Commission welcomed Latvia as a member of the monetary union and explained the introduction of euro cash in the Latvian economy, as well as the modalities of price conversion.
Design and minting of the coins
The planned drafts of the Latvian euro coins were announced in July 2006. The 2 euro coin was supposed to adorn the figure on the top of the Latvian Freedom Monument , which holds up three stars as a symbol of the three parts of the country. However, this motif collided with a specification made by the European Commission in 2008: “On the national side ... the national motif as well as the year and the name of the issuing country should be framed by the twelve European stars. The European stars should be arranged like on the European flag. ”In the more recent design by Guntars Sietiņš , the same motif was chosen for the 2 euro coin that was previously intended for the 1 euro coin, the Depiction of a Latvian woman in national costume. After the proclamation of the Republic of Latvia in 1918, the Latvian artist Rihards Zariņš (1869–1939) not only designed the small and large national coat of arms - now depicted on the cent coins designed by Laimonis Šēnbergs - but also designed the national allegory called "Milda". The model for this was Zelma Brauere (1900–1977), who as early as 1929 symbolized Latvia on the 5- lats coin.
The embossing was carried out on July 31, 2013 by the representatives of the Latvian Central Bank Ilmars Rimšēvičs (Governor) and Māris Kālis (Chairman of the Board) in the Stuttgart Mint in Bad Cannstatt. Before the Baltic state became the 18th member of the euro area on January 1, 2014, the State Mint of Baden-Württemberg produced all of Latvia's initial equipment with euro coins, a total of 400 million pieces. The Latvian euro coins were produced in the mints in Karlsruhe (1 and 10 cents and 1 euro) and in Stuttgart (2, 5, 20 and 50 cents and 2 euros).
