The Slovenian euro coins are those of Slovenia put into circulation Euro coins of the common European currency Euro . On January 1, 2007, Slovenia joined the euro zone , making the introduction of the euro valid as the future payment method.
Circulation coins
The design of the national side of the Slovenian euro coins was presented to the public on October 7, 2005. On January 1, 2007, Slovenia replaced its previous currency, the tolar, with the euro. In June 2006 the finance ministers of the European Union set an exchange rate of 239.640 tolar for one euro. The country thus also has the right to mint around 230 million euro coins, which represent a value of around 80 million euros.
The coins designed by Miljenko Licul , Maja Licul and Janez Boljka are inscribed on the edge with the lettering SLOVENIJA (Slovenia) interrupted by twelve stars . The coins show the following motifs:
- 1 cent: a stork - the same motif as on the earlier 20 tolar coin.
- 2 cents: The prince's stone (“Knežji arrived”), the upturned base of a Roman column from Noricum , was used in the Principality of Carantania for the ritual institution of the Slavic princes residing in the Karnburg .
- 5 cents: Ivan Grohar's painting “Sejalec” (“Sower”) who sows thirteen stars. According to the description of the symbolism of the coin, the 13 stars together with the twelve stars on the edge of the coin should give the number of EU member states at the time of the introduction of the euro. However, this increased to 27 on January 1, 2007 with the accession of Romania and Bulgaria.
- 10 cents: Jože Plečnik's design for a (unrealized) parliament building and the inscription “KATEDRALA SVOBODE” (Cathedral of Freedom) .
- 20 cents: Two Lipizzaners with the inscription "LIPICANEC" (Lipizzaner) .
- 50 cents: Mount Triglav , the highest mountain in Slovenia at 2,864 m below the constellation of Cancer (Slovenia became independent in June 1991) and the inscription "OJ TRIGLAV MOJ DOM" (O Triglav, my homeland) .
- 1 euro: Primož Trubar (author of the first Slovene-language book), based on a woodcut by Jakob Lederlein made in 1578 , with the inscription “STATI INU OBSTATI” (stand and insist) .
- 2 euros: National poet France Prešeren with the inscription "FRANCE PREŠEREN" and the first verse of the seventh stanza of the Zdravljica (Slovenian national anthem): "Shivé [in today's spelling Živé] naj vsi naródi" ( Goodbye to the people ).

Controversy / particularities
The depiction of the Fürstenstein on the 2-cent coin caused irritation among some Carinthian politicians, as in their opinion the Fürstenstein is not a historical element of the Republic of Slovenia and they therefore feared the appropriation of a Carinthian national symbol. The then Carinthian Governor Jörg Haider criticized the project massively. After the Slovenian government announced that the Prince's stone would be depicted on the 2-cent coins, he had it demonstratively removed from the Carinthian State Museum and placed in the foyer of the Carinthian State Government. On Haider's initiative, the Fürstenstein was depicted on all official documents and letterheads of the state of Carinthia from 2007 to 2013 as a symbol of the state government.
The depiction of Lipizzaners on the 20 cent coin was occasionally mentioned in the media in connection with the depiction of the Fürstenstein . Austria regards the Lipizzaners, which were also depicted on the earlier Austrian 5 Schilling coin , as a national symbol . Official protests against it are not known, especially since the Lipizzaners originally come from the Slovene Lipica Stud .
The inclined position of the stars on the 10-cent coin is contrary to the rules. The value side and the vertical tower axis are coordinated, so the top of the tower marks the “top”. The stars - as on the Italian 2-cent coin - should have been shown in a vertical position.
The 1-cent coin , which is generally regarded as a good luck charm , is increasingly popular as a gift for pregnancy or the birth of a child because of the stork motif, so that the Slovenian 1-cent coin is more widespread in the rest of the euro area.
Currency conversion and introduction of the euro in Slovenia
Since March 1, 2006, prices in Slovenia have been marked in both tolar and euro. The introduction of euro cash involved the exchange of 442 million coins and 108 million banknotes denominated in tolar into 155 million euro coins and 42 million euro banknotes. The Finnish State Mint Rahapaja received the order to mint the Slovenian euro coins. From the beginning of September 2006 banks and wholesalers were supplied with euro cash by Banka Slovenije .
Mints
Since there is no mint in Slovenia, the 2007 coins were minted in Finland by Suomen Rahapaja with Fi as the mint mark. In 2008 the coins were produced by the Royal Dutch Mint with the corresponding mint marks and mint master marks. From 2009 to 2011 the Finnish mint was again responsible for the production of the Slovenian euro coins, as well as the Slovakian Mincovňa Kremnica in 2012 and 2013 , each without the mint being marked.
