Miljenko Licul
Miljenko Licul (born August 6, 1946 in Vodnjan , Venezia Giulia ; died March 16, 2009 in Ljubljana ) was a Slovenian graphic designer of Croatian origin. He designed a number of coins and postage stamps, official documents and other commercial art for Slovenia. He often worked with the Slovenian sculptor Janez Boljka and with his daughter Maja Licul.
life and work
Miljenko Licul was the son of Istrian Croats in the town Vodnjan born, in that of the Yugoslav People's Army occupied part of Venezia Giulia , which later became Zone B was. Licul moved to Slovenia in his youth and spent almost his entire life there.
Licula was a co-founder of the Znak group and head of the Zodiak and Diptih graphic studios . For several years he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts of the University of Ljubljana .
In 1991 Miljenko Licul won the competition to design the Slovenian banknotes and coins in circulation from 1991 to 2006, the Slovenian tolar . The nine different banknotes showed portraits of important Slovenes, based on the work of the painter Rudi Španzel . The coins were designed by Licul with Zvone Kosovelj and modeled by the sculptor and medalist Janez Boljka . The nine value levels show animals of the Slovenian fauna. When the euro was introduced on January 1, 2007, the faces of the eight Slovenian euro coins were provided with different symbols of Slovenian history and culture. The designs were again by Miljenko Lucil, this time in collaboration with his daughter Maja Licul, the implementation was again carried out by Janez Boljka.
In addition to the Slovenian banknotes and coins, Licul designed some postage stamps and documents such as Slovenian passports, identity cards and health insurance cards. his work includes the corporate design of the Slovenian National Gallery .
