The Danish euro coins are for Denmark provided circulation coins of the common European currency Euro . The legal currency in Denmark is currently the Danish krone .
The design of the Danish coins was announced at a press conference on August 22, 2000. Either Queen Margrethe II or the Danish royal crown is depicted on the coins .
The rejection of the Maastricht Treaty in 1992 gave Denmark, together with Great Britain, the right to speak out against the euro. Nevertheless, the country has been part of the Exchange Rate Mechanism II of the European Union since 1999 and can introduce the common currency, the euro, at any time.
The designs of all eight denominations presented in 2000 no longer correspond to the current design guidelines of the EU Commission from 2008, as the twelve stars are not arranged in the same way as the European flag. In addition, it is not certain whether Margrethe II will still be queen at the unspecified time when the euro is introduced.
Referendums on the euro
2000 referendum
With the referendum of September 28, 2000, the population stopped the project. A majority of 53.2% voted against joining the Eurozone, with a turnout of 87.5%.
Planned referendum
A new referendum should only be held when approval of the euro is likely. In the meantime, the population's interest in the euro increased. Since the country fulfills the convergence criteria in an exemplary manner, it could introduce the euro immediately in a new (positive) referendum. Since the beginning of the euro crisis in 2009 , the topic has not been topical in Denmark. It is currently not foreseeable when a referendum on the introduction of the euro will take place in Denmark.
Future perspective
The European Commission wants to introduce the euro in all EU countries by 2025. According to Finance Commissioner Pierre Moscovici , no country should be forced to adopt the euro, "but we will try to create a framework so that it is an offer that cannot be refused." According to Jyllands-Posten, this means a likely introduction of the euro in Denmark within eight years (based on 2017).
