The Spanish Euro coins are in Spain put into circulation Euro coins of the common European currency Euro . On January 1, 1999, Spain joined the euro zone , which made the introduction of the euro valid as the future currency.
Circulation coins
All coins are minted in the Spanish mint of the FNMT-RCM in Madrid.
Spanish euro coins have their own motif for each of the three coin rows. The smallest series was designed by Garcilaso Rollán, the middle series by Begoña Castellanos and the two largest coins by Luis José Diaz. All designs contain the twelve stars of the EU, the year of issue and the country name ESPAÑA .
The three motifs of the Spanish euro coins are:
- 1/2/5 cent: The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela .
- 10/20/50 cents: Miguel de Cervantes , Spanish national poet and author of Don Quixote .
- 1/2 Euro: Portrait of the (former) Spanish King Juan Carlos I until 2014; from 2015: Portrait of the Spanish King Felipe VI.
Like most of the euro countries, Spain has been minting its euro coins with the newly designed front since 2007 (new map of Europe).
First mint series (1999–2009)
There was a first small change in the minting year 2009 - in this minting series the 12 European stars are slightly smaller.

Second series of embossing (2010-2014)
After Finland and Belgium, Spain was the third country in the euro zone to have its national backsides redesigned and thus complied with the recommendation of the European Commission for a uniform design of the national backsides.
The coins of the second minting series do not include a few stars on the edge or the country name. For the two highest values, the year now appears on the left, the abbreviation of the mint to the right of the monarch's head. This corresponds to the specification of the European Commission, according to which the stars on the outer ring should be arranged like on the European flag.

Third embossing series (from 2015)
After King Juan Carlos I abdicated on June 18, 2014, his son succeeded him as King Felipe VI. in office after. Linked to this is a redesign of the 1 and 2 euro denominations, which have been showing Felipe's portrait since 2015. The coins with the lower face values (1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents) remained unchanged compared to the second minting series.

World Heritage Series
In 2010 Spain started a series of 2 euro commemorative coins on Spanish World Heritage Sites . A total of 47 places or objects in Spain are currently world cultural and / or natural heritage sites (status: end of 2018). Strangely enough, the order of the displayed motifs is based on the listing in German Wikipedia , not on the order in which they were named in the official UNESCO list or in the Spanish Wikipedia.
