Pinta (ship)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pinta was the fastest of the three ships ( Santa Maria and Niña ) with which Christopher Columbus set out on the voyage to - as he believed - East Asia and Columbus' favorite ship. American land was sighted for the first time from aboard the Pinta on October 12, 1492 , probably the island of Guanahani on the northeastern edge of the Bahamas.

The Pinta was a caravel , had three masts and had a weight or a displacement of about 60 tons, which suggests a length of about 21 meters and a width of about 7 meters. The draft was around 1.7 m. The height of the bow fort was probably 1.4 m and that of the aft deck 1.2 m. The crew consisted of 26 men. The captain of the Pinta was Martín Alonso Pinzón .
