El Tránsito Synagogue

The Synagogue El Tránsito in the former Jewish quarter of the Spanish city of Toledo is also called Synagogue Samuel ha-Levi Abulafia , after the treasurer Peter I of Castile , who had it built in 1356/57. The Museo Sefardí , a museum dedicated to the history of Jews in Spain, has been located in the former synagogue since 1964 .

history

Of the ten synagogues in the city's former Jewish quarter ( Judería ), only Santa María la Blanca and El Tránsito have survived. Peter I allowed it to be built out of gratitude to the Toledan Jews for their loyalty and support in the fight against his half-brother Heinrich von Trastámara . After the Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492, the synagogue was given to the Calatrava Order, who converted it into a Catholic church dedicated to Saint Benedict . In the 17th century the name of the church was changed to Nuestra Señora del Tránsito : the name is derived from the painting El Transito de la Virgen by Juan Correa de Vivar , which is housed there. The building has been a listed building since 1877 .

building

The building on a rectangular ground plan has a remarkable Mudéjar -Innendekoration and an artful Artesonado ceiling in cedar wood . A frieze with the coat of arms of Castile and Hebrew characters runs along the side walls . On the south wall is the women's gallery with its own entrance.
