Luis Cernuda
Luis Cernuda (born September 21, 1902 in Seville , † November 5, 1963 in Mexico City ) was a Spanish writer , poet and literary critic .
Life
Cernuda was born in Seville. After finishing school, he studied at the University of Seville . There he met the poet and literature professor Pedro Salinas . After his mother's death in 1928, Cernuda left Seville and moved to Madrid , where he quickly became a member of the literary scene of the time. Cernuda was part of the Generación del 27 group in Spain, which also included Federico García Lorca . Cernuda got a one year job at the University of Toulouse . During the Spanish Civil War he was a teacher at the Cranleigh School from 1938worked in England where he taught Spanish and literature. After the Second World War, Cernuda went to Holyoke , Massachusetts , in the United States for a few years in 1947 , where he worked at Mount Holyoke College . Then Cernuda moved to California and finally to Mexico , where he lived in Mexico City until the end of his life.
Cernuda wrote several poems such as Los placeres prohibidos ( Forbidden Pleasures ). He translated various poems and works into the Spanish language. Cernuda was openly homosexual in his later years .
