The Palacio de Generalife ( Arabic جنة العريف, DMG Ǧannat al-'Arif  , Garden of the architects') was the summer palace and country estate of the Nasrid - Sultans of Granada . It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984 .

history

The palace and its gardens were built in the 13th century and rebuilt under Ismail I (1313–1324).

The complex consists of the Patio de la Acequia (courtyard of the water channel), which has a long water basin framed by flower beds, fountains, colonnades and pavilions, and the Jardín de la Sultana (garden of the Sultana ). The former is considered the best example of a medieval garden in Al-Andalus . Originally, the Generalife was connected to the Alhambra via a covered footpath across the gorge . The Generalife is one of the oldest remaining Moorish gardens.

The construction of today's gardens began in May 1931 and was completed in October 1951. The footpaths have been paved in the traditional Granada style with a mosaic of pebbles , white from the Darro River and black from the Genil .
