Ismail I (Granada)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ismail I (* 1279 ; † July 6, 1325 ), with full name Ismāʿīl ibn Faraǧ, was Emir of Granada from 1314 to 1325.

Ismail I came from a sidelines of the Nasrids . After the fall of Nasr (1309-1314), he was the first Nasride who did not descend in direct line from the founder of the empire Muhammad I to rule in Granada . He first knew how to secure the independence of the empire by recognizing the sovereignty of both Castile and the Merinids of Morocco . It was only after the Castilians had suffered a severe defeat against the Nasrids in Vega near Granada on June 26, 1319, that Ismail I felt strong enough to renounce the suzerainty of these two powers. In the following years he was able to recapture some of the border areas that his two predecessors had lost to Castile. However, Ismail I was murdered as early as 1325. His son Muhammad IV (1325-1333) succeeded him as a minor on the throne of Granada.
