Muhammad IV (Granada)

Muhammad IV (* 1315 ; † 1333 ) was Emir of Granada from 1325 to 1333.

Muhammad IV was the underage successor of his father Ismail I (1314-1325). First he had to defend himself against the attacks of Castile , whereby the emirate of the Nasrid u. a. suffered considerable defeats and territorial losses in the Battle of Teba (1330). To protect against this Castilian threat, the Merinids from Morocco were again called to Al-Andalus . This marked the beginning of the second intervention of this Moroccan dynasty in Europe . With the help of these troops, as well as the naval support of the Republic of Genoa , the conquest of Algeciras and Gibraltar succeeded in 1333 , with which Castile lost its strong position on this strait to the Nasrids. However, Muhammad IV could not take advantage of his success, as he was murdered shortly after conquering these cities. He was succeeded by his brother Yusuf I (1333-1354), under whom the empire reached its height.
