Arnold Hottinger
Arnold Hottinger (born December 6, 1926 in Basel ; † May 21, 2019 in Zug ) was a Swiss journalist and publicist .
Life
Arnold Hottinger, son of the pediatrician Adolf Hottinger and the chemist Greta Hottinger-Cahn, grew up in Düsseldorf and Basel and studied Oriental and Romance studies at the University of Zurich , where he received his doctorate in 1952 . He pursued further studies in Paris , Chicago , Cairo and Beirut . In addition to German , English , French , Spanish and Italian, he spoke seven Arabic dialects and Farsi .
From 1961 to 1991 he was a correspondent for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung in Beirut and reported on the Middle East and the Islamic and Arab world . Later he was a correspondent in Madrid and finally in Nicosia . He also worked for many radio stations, wrote for magazines and published numerous books on Islam , Arabia and the Middle East, some of which are considered standard works . Even in his retirement, Hottinger was a sought-after expert and speaker and wrote regularly for the online portal Journal21 . He lived in Zug until his death.
Hottinger died in May 2019 at the age of 92 as a result of a heart operation that had failed four months earlier and was aborted .
The mediator Julian Thomas Hottinger is his son. His younger brother was the paleontologist Lukas Hottinger .
