Erich Gysling (born July 17, 1936 in Zurich ) is a Swiss journalist , publicist and author.

Life

Erich Gysling attended schools in Zurich and studied cultural history in Vienna . He worked as a journalist for the daily newspaper Düsseldorfer Mittag and the radio station RIAS , then for the daily news of Swiss television . In 1964 he became head of the Tagesschau editorial team, and in 1968 he co-founded the Rundschau broadcast .

From 1972 he headed the international editorial team of Weltwoche for ten years , then returned to Swiss television ten years later. In 1985 he took over the newly created function of editor-in-chief and at the same time head of the Tagesschau , where he was also the presenter of the main edition. In 1990 Gysling took over the management of the Rundschau .

From 1994 to 1996 he was chief commentator for political events. Since then he has been working as a freelance, for example as a presenter and editor of the show Standpunkte for NZZ press TV , as a speaker, travel guide or as a commentator and panelist for numerous media. He is also the editor-in-chief of the Weltrundschau yearbook .

During his journalistic career, Erich Gysling completed a degree in Arabic and, after intensively studying the Middle East, wrote three books on this subject. He is also considered a connoisseur of the Eastern European countries. From 2001 to 2014 he was President of the Forum East-West Association .

Gysling has a command of twelve languages, including Arabic , Farsi and Kiswahili , at least to the level that he can have an everyday conversation.
