Her professors included Renato Guttuso , Pericle Fazzini and Pietro Giampaoli .

In 1961 Laura Cretara was hired as an engraver by the Istituto Poligrafico, which also functions as a state mint . She is not only the institute's first female engraver, but also the first woman to design an Italian coin. Her designs for the face of some Italian euro coins and San Marino and Vatican euro coins achieved great fame . Since 2002, this includes the 1 euro currency coins from Italy with the Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci , the 1 cent and 20 cent Vatican coins issued during the 2005 Sedis vacancy with the coat of arms of the Cardinal Chamberlain and since 2017 the 5 cent coin from San Marino .

As a sculptor, she appeared with a work made of silver for the International Year of Peace 1985, which is located in the UN headquarters in New York City . Other sculptures are in Rome and in a church in San Marino.

From 1976 to 2004 Laura Cretara was director of the Scuola dell'Arte della Medaglia - Giuseppe Romagnoli . In 1987 she also took on the role of artistic director of the mint and the associated numismatic museum, the Museo della Zecca di Roma . During her tenure, she contributed to the installation of several works of art in the public space of the city of Rome, such as a copy of the equestrian statue of Mark Aurel , which has stood on Capitol Square since 1997 . Since 2006 Cretara has been a member of the permanent technical-artistic commission of the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance .
