Marcinelle is the name of a municipality in the Belgian city of Charleroi on the banks of the Sambre in the province of Hainaut .

history

Marcinelle was first mentioned in a document in 980.

In the 19th century , Marcinelle, like almost all the villages in the Charleroi coalfield, advanced to become an industrial community, which resulted in mines and steel industries .

In 1898 Charles Dupuis founded a printing company and in 1922 the comic book publisher Dupuis . The relaxed style of the publisher's draftsman was called École Marcinelle after the Second World War .

In the Bois du Cazier coal mine , a mine accident occurred on August 8, 1956, with 262 dead. In the 1960s, when the coal and steel industry declined, the mines were closed.

When Belgian municipalities merged in 1977, Marcinelle was incorporated into the city of Charleroi.
