Christoph Rehmann-Sutter (born February 26, 1959 ) is a philosopher and bioethicist . He teaches the theory and ethics of life sciences at the Institute for Medical History and Science Research (IMGWF) at the University of Lübeck .

Career

Christoph Rehmann-Sutter grew up as the son of the sculptor Erwin Rehmann and the teacher Margrit Rehmann (-Hüsser) in Laufenburg / Switzerland. School education in Laufenburg and Aarau. He studied molecular biology ( diploma ) until 1984 at the University of Basel and a second degree in philosophy and sociology ( licentiate in 1988) at the universities of Basel and Freiburg i. Brsg.

He completed his doctorate in 1995 at the Technical University of Darmstadt under Gernot Böhme on the subject of “Describing life. About contexts of action in biology ”. During this time he was a research assistant for natural philosophy and bioethics in Werner Arber's research group at the University of Basel. In 1996 he founded the Ethics Unit in the Biosciences at the University of Basel. There he completed his habilitation in 2000 on the subject of “Living Self - Living Others. Ethics in Biomedical and Ecological Contexts ”.

While working on his habilitation thesis, he was a research fellow in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management (ESPM) at the University of California, Berkeley . In 2000 he was appointed assistant professor for ethics in the life sciences and biotechnology at the University of Basel. In 2001 he was elected President of the then newly established National Ethics Commission in the field of human medicine by the Swiss government. He held this office until 2009. In spring 2009 he started work as a professor of theory and ethics in the biosciences at the University of Lübeck .
