Gertrude Ibengwe Mongella (born September 13, 1945 in Ukerewe , Lake Victoria , Tanzania ) was the first female President of the Pan-African Parliament of the African Union from 2004 to 2009 . In 2009 she was re-elected for a further term until 2014.

After studying educational science at the University of Dar es Salaam , Mongella was appointed minister for women from 1982 to 1986 and tourism minister from 1985 to 1987, and from 1989 to 1991 minister with no special responsibilities in Tanzania under Julius Kambarage Nyerere and Ali Hassan Mwinyi . She then switched to the service of the United Nations as a diplomat and, among other things, headed the UN World Conference on Women from 1993 to 1995 . In March 2004 she was elected President of the Pan-African Parliament. In 2005 she was awarded the Delta Prize for Global Understanding for her work for peace in Africa . Also in 2005 she received the Martin Luther King Memorial Prize Drum Major for Justice Award . She is an honorary member of the World Future Council .
