Edward Moringe Sokoine

Edward Moringe Sokoine ( 1938 - April 12, 1984 ) was the Prime Minister of Tanzania . He had two terms from February 13, 1977 to November 7, 1980 and from February 23, 1983 to April 12, 1984. He was the fourth prime minister since Tanzania's independence in 1961. The Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro was named after him .

Life

Sokoine was born in Monduli, south of the city of Arusha , in 1938. He attended schools in Monduli and Umbwe from 1948 to 1958 and in 1961 joined the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU), which was founded by Julius Nyerere . From 1962 to 1963 Sokoine was in Germany to study. Upon his return, he was appointed District Executive Officer of Masai District and was promoted to the National Assembly. In 1967 he became Minister of Communications, Transport and Labor. But his political success continued. In 1970 he became Minister of State and in 1972 Sokoine became Secretary of Defense. Then he was again a member of the National Assembly , this time for Monduli. After the formation of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi in 1977, Sokoine became a member of the central committee. He was then appointed the new Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania and was in office until 1981.

In 1983 he was re-elected. When the successor to President Nyerere debate began in 1984, Sokoine was an often-mentioned and popular name in it. His death in a car accident on April 12, 1984 gave rise to various conspiracy theories.

His memory is kept alive to this day (2019).
