Cricket World Cup 2007

The stadium in January 2012

The Sir Vivian Richards Stadium is one for cricket and football -used stadium in North Sound in the Parish of St. Peter on Antigua in the Caribbean state of Antigua and Barbuda . It was built for the 2007 Cricket World Cup . Super 8 matches took place there during the tournament. The available space can be doubled from 10,000 to 20,000 seats if required.

Surname

The stadium was named after Sir Vivian Richards , the former team captain and world-class batsman of the West Indies .

location

The sports complex is about 20 minutes by car from VC Bird International Airport and the state capital St. John's . The construction of the plant cost around US $ 60 million and was financed by China .

The first cricket matches

The first match was held on March 27, 2007 as One-Day International . The West Indies faced Australia . The first test match took place from May 30th to June 3rd, 2008 , with the West Indies and Australia facing each other.

The "Battle of the Antigua Sandpit"

England and the West Indies competed in the second test match on the ground on February 13, 2009 . After the ground was repeatedly submerged, those responsible for the site added a lot of sand. As a result, the bowlers could not find a secure hold and the game was abandoned after only ten balls in England's innings. The sandy ground in the outfield gave rise to the nickname "Antigua's 366th Beach" - the island has 365 natural beaches.

As a result, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) started investigations. As a result, the facility was closed for twelve months for all official competitions and the WICB was warned by the ICC.
