Matthew Lawrence Hayden (nickname: "Haydos" ) (born October 29, 1971 in Kingaroy , Queensland ) is a former Australian cricket player and former first batsman on the Australian national team . He was known for scoring quick points in both test cricket and one-day cricket .

Hayden made his debut in a one-day international match for the Australian national team on May 19, 1993 against England in Manchester . Until April 1994 he was regularly used in ODI matches. He made his test debut in March 1994 against South Africa in Johannesburg . Until 2000, however, he was only used sporadically in tests, as he was often eliminated early as a batsman. It wasn't until 2000 that he made his breakthrough in a one-day international match against New Zealand . After he scored an average of 109.80 points in a tournament against India in 2001, reminiscent of cricket legend Donald Bradman , he became an integral part of the team. In October 2003 he reached against Zimbabwe with 380 runs, the highest number of runs scored in an innings at that time . The record was broken in 2004 by Brian Lara with 400 runs. In February 2007, Hayden scored 181 runs not out in one-day cricket against New Zealand . He holds the Australian record for the highest number of runs in an innings in both test and one-day cricket.

Together with Justin Langer , Hayden formed the second most successful starting baton team of all time.
