The Northamptonshire County Cricket Club represents the traditional county of Northamptonshire in the national championships of English cricket .

history

The beginnings

Cricket in Northampton can be traced back to 1820, but the County Cricket Club was not established until 1878. Northamptonshire played isolated county matches, which accumulated until the late 1880s. When the Official County Championship was established in 1890 , Northamptonshire was not part of it. From 1895 they took part in the Minor Counties Cricket Championship and were able to win the championship there for the first time in 1899 with a shared title with Buckinghamshire . In 1900 it was repeated when the title was shared with Durham and Glamorgan . With the double championship in 1903 and 1904, which were mainly decided by the bowlers George Thompson and William East , the way to first-class status was paved. Their first first class game took place in the 1905 season against Hampshire in Southampton , which ended in a draw. They played their home games in the County Cricket Ground in Northampton, which has been in use since 1880 . In the championship, they mostly ended up in the lower half of the table, as the team's hitting skills were insufficient. This only changed shortly before the First World War, when it came second in 1912 and fourth in 1913 . With the start of the war, the great decline followed. Between the wars, the best place was an 11th place and after a final place in 1923, it was followed by two consecutive places in 1930 and 1931 . They were particularly unsuccessful between May 14, 1935 and May 29, 1939, when they did not achieve a single victory. Consequently, they were bottom of the table for five seasons in a row ( 1934 , 1935 , 1936 , 1937 , 1938 ). Among other things, the reason was that the England international Fred Bakewell was so badly injured in a car accident in 1936 that he could no longer play for Northampton.

After the Second World War

After the war, the first three seasons were no better with a penultimate ( 1946 ) and two last places ( 1947 and 1948 ), but then a slow change began. With the signing of Freddie Brown of Surrey as captain , they achieved sixth place this season . Northamptonshire spent the next few years in midfield before Brown stepped down in 1953. However, during this time the club had signed three Australians, Jock Livingston , George Tribe and Jack Manning , who stabilized the team. Together with bowler Frank Tyson and batsman Raman Subba Row , they achieved second place in 1957 . After a slide that brought them a penultimate place in 1961 , they managed to move up to the top half of the table and another second place in 1965 . The team then slipped again and in 1969 they lost another player, Colin Miburn, in a car accident. The subsequent rise led to the club's most successful period. Among others, Bishan Bedi , Mushtaq Mohammad and Sarfraz Nawaz had signed as overseas players , and so the team improved significantly. In 1973 and 1974 they each achieved third places in the County Championship.

Time of one-day successes

In 1976 they won their first title in a one-day championship when they won the Gillette Cup . They also finished second in the County Championship that season . With the entry of Allan Lamb in 1978, the team could be strengthened again and so they were second in the Gillette Cup in 1979 when they lost to Somerset . In the following season they succeeded in winning the Benson & Hedges Cup . Thereupon new players were signed with Kapil Dev , Rob Bailey and David Capel , who improved the one-day cricket even further. In 1981 they made it back to the final of the NatWest Trophy , but they lost there after an even score because they had lost more wickets. In the county championship, meanwhile, they mostly played in midfield, where they stayed for the rest of the 1980s. Furthermore, good results were achieved in the one-day competitions. The next finals were in 1987. There they lost both in the NatWest Trophy against Nottinghamshire , and the Benson & Hedges Cup against Yorkshire . The latter defeat was particularly bitter, as they once again to Run lost TIE due to the more lost wickets. In 1989 the West Indian bowler Curtly Ambrose was signed as the new overseas player. In 1990 they reached their next final in the NatWest Trophy , but lost with 7 wickets to Lancashire . The next title win came in 1992 in the NatWest Trophy. Two final entries followed in 1995 in the NatWest Trophy and in 1996 in the Benson & Hedges Cup . Within 20 years, with 10 finals, they had made the most appearances in Lord’s , where the finals are traditionally held, of all county teams. After that season Northamptonshire fell back again. In the 2000 shared County Championship they played in the second division. In 2000, 2003 and 2013 they were promoted to the first division, but in the following season they each had to relegate. They achieved other titles in the Twenty20 Cup . In 2013 they beat Surrey by a clear margin and in 2016 it was batsman Josh Cobb who helped Northamptonshire win the title with a good performance against Durham .

Stadion

The club's home ground is the County Cricket Ground in Northampton . The Campbell Park Cricket Ground in Milton Keynes is now occasionally used as another stadium .
