Kapil Dev (born January 6, 1959 in Chandigarh , Punjab , India ) is a retired Indian cricketer . He is considered one of the best all-rounders in the history of cricket. In 1983 he was named one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year . He was the captain of the Indian team in a total of 34 test matches and in 74 One-Day Internationals (ODIs).

Career

During his career, Kapil Dev made 131 tests for India, scoring a total of 434 wickets and 5,248 runs. In 1994 he broke the record for most wickets in test cricket on the Sri Lankan tour in India , previously held by Richard Hadlee . His record was broken again in 1999 by Courtney Walsh . Kapil Dev is the only player in test cricket history to score more than 4,000 runs and 400 wickets. He also played 225 ODIs for India, scoring 253 wickets and 3783 runs. With the Indian team he took part in four cricket world championships ( 1979 , 1983 , 1987 and 1992 ). In 1983 he and his team won the title. In 2009 Kapil Dev was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame.
