Marco Di Vaio (born July 15, 1976 in Rome , Italy ) is a former Italian football player .

Career

Club career

Marco Di Vaio started his career in the youth department of Lazio . In 1996 he made his debut in the professional squad. Other stations included Hellas Verona (1996), AS Bari (1996/97) and Salernitana Sport (1997–1999). With Salernitana he won in 1997/98 the series B . The Roman contributed 21 hits to the promotion of the Campanian club to Serie A and thus secured the title of top scorer . In the following season, however, the Salernitana rose again despite twelve Di Vaio hits.

Therefore, in 1999, he switched to Serie A club AC Parma . Marco Di Vaio played there for three years and met Hidetoshi Nakata , Johan Micoud , Márcio Amoroso , Sérgio Conceição , among others . In 2002 he moved to Juventus Turin for 26 million euros , which had a particularly good season. He became a regular at his club and in the national team. After being in the Euro 2004 played a fairly unremarkable, he went to the Spanish club Valencia .

In January 2006 Marco Di Vaio switched from FC Valencia to AS Monaco on loan , and in summer 2006 the Monegasque took up their purchase option and signed Di Vaio permanently. The reason for his departure from Valencia were the club's financial hardships and a lack of discipline, which he allowed himself on April 17, 2005. Di Vaio had been replaced at the time and had made insulting gestures in the direction of the coach at the time, Antonio López Habas . He moved back to Italy after just one year. There he signed a contract with the second division CFC Genoa in January 2007 until the summer of 2009. In the back series of the 2006/07 season , Di Vaio scored nine goals in 21 games, helping the Grifoni to rise to Serie A, where he was in 2007/08 scored only three goals in 22 games.

For the 2008/09 season Marco Di Vaio moved to Serie A promoted Bologna FC and immediately scored his first goal on his debut for the Emilian club in a 2-1 away win at AC Milan . He stayed in Bologna for four years, with the striker playing over a hundred competitive games and scoring 65 league goals before signing a contract with Montreal Impact from Major League Soccer .

At Impact, Di Vaio has established himself as a regular player and important striker since the Canadians started in Major League Soccer in the 2012 season . In his first season he scored five goals in 17 league games, in the 2013 season he came in 33 games to 20 goals this season, including a hat trick against the Philadelphia Union . For this season performance, Di Vaio was awarded various titles in the MLS: He was honored as the most valuable player by Montreal Impact of the 2013 season and appointed to the MLS Best XI 2013 , i.e. the best line-up in the league. He was also able to win the Canadian Championship 2013 , the Canadian Cup, with Montreal Impact .

Montreal also won the Canadian Championship in 2014 . At the end of the regular season of the 2014 season  - Montreal Impact took last place in the Eastern Conference and thus missed the play-offs  - Di Vaio ended his career as an active player.

National team

Di Vaio was first appointed to the Italian national team in 2001 . In addition to some appearances in friendly matches , Di Vaio was used in the 4-0 win of the Italians against Azerbaijan as part of the qualification for the 2004 European Championship . He was appointed to the Italian team for the 2004 European Championship in Portugal . His only use during the tournament was in the preliminary round against Bulgaria (final score 2-1), when he came on for Marco Materazzi in the 82nd minute .

He played his last international match on October 9, 2004, against Slovenia (final score 0: 1) as part of qualifying for the 2006 World Cup .

Alleged match-fixing

In July 2012 it became known that Di Vaio had to answer in court because he had not reported to the Italian association of match fixing that he was alleged to have known. In August 2012, however, Di Vaio was acquitted by the FIGC Disciplinary Committee .
