The G41 is an assault rifle from Heckler & Koch , which in 1979 Bundeswehr was tested.
It was intended as a replacement weapon, if the for caseless ammunition furnished G11 should be a commercial failure. An attempt was made to combine as many advantages of existing systems as possible in one project with this weapon. However, due to the changed political situation and the price (approx. USD 1,700 for bulk purchases), both projects were not implemented.
Although it the HK33 is similar, the G41 a few key differences: The magazine well has been designed so that the for the American M16 used magazines could be used. The handguard has been enlarged, similar to the M16, and is almost triangular in shape. A foldable handle was adopted from the design of the FN FAL . Instead of trains and fields , the barrel had a right-handed, hexagonal polygonal profile and was optimized for the SS 109 cartridge (V 0 = 910 m / s). The second barrel variant offered with a different twist length was set up for the faster M193 cartridge (V 0 = 945 m / s). The flash hider extended the standard barrel to 480 mm. For the first time it was possible to choose between single and continuous fire as well as 3-shot bursts . When the magazine was empty, the bolt remained open.
