Lists on the subject

The HK417 assault rifle manufactured by Heckler & Koch in the 7.62 × 51 mm NATO caliber is the more powerful version of the HK416 . In the Bundeswehr it operates as the G27 .

technology

The HK417 is a short stroke gas pressure charger . The gas pressure acts on a short gas piston, which forwards the impulse to the bolt carrier via an intermediate piece. In the bolt carrier sits the rotary head bolt, which locks with 7 locking lugs in the cartridge chamber. The lock housing is made of aluminum and, like the AR-15, is horizontally divided into a lower and upper part. The barrels are cold hammered and available in various lengths; they can - with special tools - also be exchanged in the field camp. The forend is equipped with four NATO rails to which various accessories can be mounted. The controls are the same as on the AR-15 . The HK417 can fire single and continuous fire. The prototype used steel and aluminum magazines of the G3 with 20 rounds each. Polymer magazines similar to those of the G36 were developed for the production version . The possibility of clipping several magazines together was dispensed with. The 40 mm GLM add- on grenade launcher based on the AG36 can be mounted under the barrel.

The HK417 is designed for use as a Designated Marksman Rifle (DMR) and is produced in three variants, which mainly differ in terms of the barrel length.

Initially internally, the Bundeswehr discovered deficiencies in the trigger group retaining bolt and in the case ejection. A BAAINBw official made these shortcomings public.
