The SL8 from Heckler & Koch is a self-loading rifle in .223 Remington caliber (5.56 × 45 mm) for sport shooters . It is the first civilian adaptation of the G36 rifle and differs from it in that it is limited to single fire and the magazine capacity is limited to a maximum of ten cartridges, as well as a thick-walled barrel without a flash hider.
The first versions of the rifle were made of gray-colored plastic , a measure that was apparently intended to avoid falling under the so-called appearances of Section 37 of the German Weapons Act - the old version before its amendment came into force on April 1, 2003 . After this paragraph was removed as part of the amendment, the sport rifle is now available in black, and there are so-called dye sets on the market with which the gray plastic parts can be colored black. Since the basic shape of the weapon is no longer an issue in Germany, Heckler & Koch has been marketing the HK243 instead of the SL8 since 2013 , which consists of parts of the G36 apart from the barrel and bolt head. The SL8 will still be produced.
The SL8 has a cold-hammered, hard chrome-plated barrel and is suitable for both right and left-handers thanks to the centrally located loading lever . The slide catch when the magazine is empty facilitates quick magazine changes, the shaft can be individually adapted by length adjustment and exchangeable jaw parts.
A manageable number of accessories are now also available. These are mostly parts that have been adopted from the military variant or derived from it. For example, the magazine slot and holder can be exchanged for that of the G36 in order to accommodate the rod magazines of the G36 instead of the usual trapezoidal magazines .
The SL9SD variant with integrated silencer uses special subsonic ammunition and is intended for use by the military and authorities.
