Lists on the subject

The MG36 is a light machine gun from Heckler & Koch based on the HK G36 assault rifle . Together with this it was successfully tested in the mid-1990s and later introduced under the NATO stock numbers 1005-12-336-6892 and 1005-12-336-6893.

Since, as with the assault rifle, the barrel is firmly connected to the housing and a combat-like barrel change is not possible after a long burst, the MG36 is regarded as a light support weapon in the infantry group.

The technical data and functions are identical to those of the G36, with the MG36 tube being reinforced between the chamber and the gas outlet. The 20% higher mass of the pipe increases its weight by 135 g. The MG36 conventionally has a bipod and the ammunition is supplied via a 100-round drum magazine, but it can also be used with the 30- round rod magazine of the G36, as it is almost identical to this except for small details such as the stronger barrel.

In July 1995, 4,700 units of the MG36 were ordered from Heckler & Koch by the federal government. However, due to an amendment agreement from October 1997 requested by the German Armed Forces, it was ultimately not procured “until further notice”. The additional performance compared to the G36 was classified as too marginal. However, the G36 is used in the Bundeswehr with a bipod and drum magazine, which can lead to confusion with the MG36.

As part of the IdZ program , the HK MG4 with the same caliber - but with a slightly different barrel - was introduced eight years later .
