Marcelo Balboa (born August 8, 1967 in Chicago , Illinois ) is a retired American football player .
The defender was the captain of the United States national soccer team for a long time during the 1990s and participated in the 1990, 1994 and 1998 World Cups.
After retiring, he worked in administration at Coloradio Rapids and in 2012 was in charge of a student team at Monarch High School in Louisville, Colorado . He is also active as a commentator and analyst for various US television stations.
Player career
youth
Balboa had Argentine ancestry and grew up in Cerritos , California . He played in the youth football club Fram-Culver and was able to win the McGuire Cup (National U19 Championship) in 1986. His father, a former soccer player who was active in Argentina and the North American Soccer League , trained him here. In 1985 Balboa graduated from Cerritos High School and then attended Cerritos College. In 1988 he moved to San Diego State University . There he was appointed to the selection teams of the best college players in the USA for the next two years.
professional
From 1987 to 1989 he played during his time in college for the San Diego Nomads in the Western Soccer League. In 1988 he was voted the most valuable player in the league. In 1990 he began his career as a professional player with the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks in the American Professional Soccer League. In 1992 he moved to the Colorado Foxes, who also played in the APSL.
In 1994 and 1995 Balboa played for Club León in Mexico .
When Major League Soccer was founded in 1996 , he played for the Colorado Rapids . He stayed there for the next 6 years before ending his career with the MetroStars in 2002 .
National team
Balboa took part in the World Cup in 1990 , 1994 and 1998 in part. In 1990 he was the team captain. In 1994 he made a very good game against Colombia in the preliminary round of the World Cup and shot the Colombians' goal with an overhead kick.
He was the first CONCACAF player to make 100 internationals, and between 1988 and 2000 he made 128 internationals in which he scored 13 goals.
Private
Balboa lives in Superior, Colorado . In addition to his work as a commentator on US sports television, he is the technical director of Trebol Soccer Club, a youth soccer club based in Lafayette, Colorado .
