Robert "Bobby" Francis Convey (born May 27, 1983 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American football player . His strengths of the left midfielder include an above-average speed, his creativity in building up the game and good ball handling.

Athletic career

Convey attended Penn Charter High School and then was a member of the first year of Bradenton Academy , a prestigious soccer school in Bradenton , Florida , which also included his future national teammates Landon Donovan and DaMarcus Beasley . Together they led the U-17 selection of the US national team to fourth place at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in New Zealand in 1999 . Convey, who as a 15-year-old was the youngest ever used player in the U-17 qualification during qualification, played in all six games of the tournament and scored 19 goals in a total of 43 games for this team.

The left winger who also as a full-back can act, came a year later on the drafting system in the Major League Soccer (MLS) to DC United and was at that time the youngest player in MLS history. Originally, Convey was supposed to play mainly in the so-called Project 40 team this season , a team of the MLS and the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) sponsored by Nike , but then had to step in for his club when this showed poor performance in the championship. He came to 20 games for United, where he ran up in 18 games from the start. He made his debut on March 25, 2000 in the 4-0 home defeat to Los Angeles Galaxy at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium and came on May 3 in the 1: 2 away against Columbus Crew for the first start. However, it was not until the May 3 game against the Colorado Rapids that he made his first assist with a cross to Raúl Díaz Arce . Convey then earned more attention in a friendly against the English Premier League club Newcastle United , who were in the USA during their pre-season preparations. On October 25, 2000, he came against Mexico for his first international match and was by his substitution in stoppage time the then third-youngest player who was ever used in the US national team.

On April 7, 2001, he scored his first goal in the MLS against the Kansas City Wizards and was at this point again the youngest player in league history to succeed. During the season, however, injuries plagued him, so that he only came to 12 championship games. In the same year he was also nominated for the Junior World Cup and was on the field in all four games for the United States.

From 2002, Convey led the U-20 selection as team captain, qualified with the team for the finals in the United Arab Emirates the following year and was voted the best young US athlete of the year. At the Junior World Championship in 2003, the selection of the United States reached the quarter-finals and was defeated there by the team from Argentina .

After ten games for DC United in the early stages of the season Convey signed a contract with Reading FC on July 22, 2004 , which at that time played in the Football League Championship - the second highest professional league in England. In England , however, he was initially unable to assert himself, but came to a total of nine appearances in the senior national team of his country this year. During the 2005/06 season, Conveys form improved significantly and he was then rewarded with frequent appearances in the starting lineup. His first goals were in the 5-0 win against Millwall FC . This was followed by the promotion of Reading FC to the Premier League. In 2006, Convey took part in the World Cup in Germany and was used in all three games in the USA.

His first season in the top English professional league was unfortunate. After a knee injury, which ultimately made an operation necessary, the season ended for him in October 2006. He only returned in the following season and was regularly used.

On February 6, 2009, Convey and Reading agreed to terminate his contract. Four days later he signed with the San José Earthquakes in Major League Soccer, where he scored his first goal for the Quakes on April 11, 2009. The peculiarity was that he played for the first time in six years on the position of the left defender.

After a falling out with coach Frank Yallop, Convey announced in November 2011 that he would not play for San Jose in the coming season. He then moved to Sporting Kansas City .
