Joel Nathaniel Campbell Samuels (born June 26, 1992 in San José ) is a Costa Rican football player on the position of a striker .

Club career

Career start with the record champions

Campbell began his active career with the youngsters of the Costa Rican record champions in football, Deportivo Saprissa . There he went through all youth leagues and was particularly noticeable for his offensive performances, which brought him various appearances in the U-16 and U-17 selection of Costa Rica. After a few years in the offspring, he was brought into the men's team for the first time at the age of 17 with play in the Primera División de Costa Rica , in which he made his debut in the 2009/10 season. He was first used on November 15, 2009 in the 4-1 win over his future loan club, when he came on in the 86th minute of play for his offensive teammate Jairo Obando . In the Invierno 2009 still without a title, the team won the championship title in the subsequent Verano 2010 after completing the final round. Campbell spent this time mostly in the club's own offspring and only came back to the professionals in the 2010/11 season , where he was finally used more often in the team from the 2010 Invierno

Interest from foreign associations

After Campbell had been used in the qualifying rounds for the CONCACAF U-20 championship 2011 for Costa Rica and was also successful as a goalscorer, he went on loan to league rivals Puntarenas FC in early February 2011 . For the 2010/11 season he came more and more to the top division of the country. He made his debut for Puntarenas on February 6, when he came onto the pitch for his teammate Ariel Santana in the 2-0 win over Santos de Guápiles from the second half of the game . It was mainly because of his achievements in the 2011 CONCACAF U-20 Championship , which among other things brought him the top scorer's crown, to the attention of numerous international clubs, as well as numerous clubs from Italy .

For the 2011/12 season Campbell moved to Arsenal , but was loaned first to Lorient FC and later to Betis Sevilla for the 2012/13 season . In the summer of 2013 he was loaned to the Greek record champions Olympiacos Piraeus for another year .

For the 2014/15 season Campbell returned to Arsenal after his good performance at the World Cup . However, it was not used there as desired. On January 28, 2015 Campbell moved in the course of the transfer from Gabriel to Arsenal FC on loan to the Spanish Primera División to Villarreal until the end of the season .

National team career

Campbell began his career in the Costa Rican youth selection during his youth at Deportivo Saprissa. At that time he was used in the U-16 national team of Costa Rica and took part with the team in the 2007 UNCAF U-16 tournament, in which he also excelled as a goalscorer. Then he was also used in the U-17 team of Costa Rica , with which he took part in qualifying for the CONCACAF U-17 championship in 2009 and scored four goals in a game against his colleagues from Nicaragua . Since the tournament was stopped prematurely due to the swine flu outbreak, Costa Rica qualified as second in group B for the subsequent U-17 World Cup in 2009 . At the CONCACAF U-17 championship, Campbell entered the top scorer list twice, making him the most successful Costa Rican in the competition. He was also in the Costa Rican squad and was used in all three games, in which, after a 1-1 draw in the group game against his colleagues from New Zealand, he also contributed to the only point his team won in the competition when he was 35. Due to his achievements, Campbell was brought shortly afterwards by Ricardo La Volpe into the 23-man squad of Costa Rica , which participated in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2011 in June 2011. Just over a week later, Campbell made his first international match for Costa Rica's senior team when he was substituted in for the friendly international match against Nigeria . At the subsequent tournament in Guatemala, the attacker was used in the first group game against Cuba . He came on the pitch for Marco Ureña in the 58th minute and scored the goal 13 minutes later to make it 5-0. After completing the Gold Cup, Campbell was also considered to have a place in the Costa Rican junior team, which took part in the 2011 Junior World Cup in Colombia from June to August 2011 .
