Veljko Paunović (born August 21, 1977 in Strumica ) is a former Serbian football player and today's coach . Since 2006 he has also had Spanish citizenship.

Player career

The son of the former Yugoslav national player and coach Blagoje Paunović went through all youth teams of the traditional Serbian club FK Partizan from Belgrade . After playing one season in Partizan's first team, he moved to the Spanish club CA Marbella in 1995 . A season later, the move to Atlético Madrid came about, for which he appeared over the next six years. He played for the club's first and second teams. During this time at Atlético he was loaned twice to RCD Mallorca and once to Real Oviedo . With Mallorca he was in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1999 . But he had his best season in 2002/03 when he switched to CD Tenerife . In 38 league games he scored 18 goals in the Segunda División . In January 2005 Paunović was committed as the "dream player" of the then coach Ewald Lienen against the wishes of the manager Ilja Kaenzig from Hannover 96 . After only six missions without a goal, his contract was terminated at the end of April 2005. After further stints at FC Getafe , Rubin Kazan and UD Almería , he moved back to Partizan on July 12, 2008. There he signed a contract for two years.

On December 24, 2008, he announced his retirement as a football player, but on June 29, 2009 Paunović completed a trial with the New York Red Bulls . However, he subsequently refused to accept an offered one-year contract. In May 2011, he moved to Philadelphia Union to replace Carlos Ruiz , who could not play due to obligations with the national team of Guatemala . Paunović was only in the Philadelphia Union Reserve squad. He made his major league soccer debut on June 18, 2011. Two game days later, he scored his first goal for the team. On January 18, 2012 Paunović announced the end of his career.

National team

In 2002 Paunović made his debut for the national soccer team of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia against Mexico . He scored his first international goal in his second and last appearance on April 28, 2004 against the national team of Northern Ireland , but this time for the Serbian-Montenegrin national soccer team, successor to the national team of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

Coaching career

After Veljko Paunović coached the U18 , U19 and U20 teams for the Serbian Football Association between 2012 and 2015 , he worked as the coach of Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer from 2016 . After the 2019 season he was replaced by Raphael Wicky .
