Hayden Ian Mullins (born March 27, 1979 in Reading , Berkshire ) is a retired English football player .

Club career

In August 1996, Mullins joined the Crystal Palace youth squad . At the age of 18, he made his debut against Bolton Wanderers in August 1998. He scored his first goal in his third appearance for the club. He established himself very quickly within the team and concluded his first season with 45 appearances in league and cup. He was named Player of the Year and played for the England U-21 national team .

In the 1999/2000 season, Crystal Palace had financial problems so that no new players could be signed. So Mullins could hold his regular seat unhindered. With 49 league and cup appearances, he managed with the team to prevent relegation to Football League One .

In 2003 he moved to West Ham United for £ 625,000, for which he played 180 league games and scored four goals. Despite great competition from the Argentine international Javier Mascherano , he was able to maintain his regular place in the midfield of West Ham.

In January 2009 Mullins signed a contract with Portsmouth FC , where he was one of the regulars.
