Jan Johannes Vennegoor of Hesselink [ ˈjɑn ˈvɛnəˌɣoːr ɔf ˈɦɛsəlɪŋk ] (born November 7, 1978 in Oldenzaal ) is a former Dutch football player . He was three times Dutch champion with PSV Eindhoven and twice Scottish champion with Celtic Glasgow . The striker played 19 times for the national team .
Career
In his youth Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink played for the amateur club Quick '20 in his hometown of Oldenzaal. In 1993 he was discovered and signed by FC Twente Enschede . On September 15, 1996 he made his debut in a 0-1 home defeat against Feyenoord Rotterdam in the Eredivisie . At FC Twente he scored a total of 59 goals in 142 games, his highest number of hits he had in the 1998/99 season with 21 goals in 34 games. This season he also achieved two of his three “three-packs”: in the 3-0 away win against Fortuna Sittard and in the 5-2 in Maastricht at MVV . The following season he also scored three times at home in a 4-2 draw against NEC Nijmegen . In the 2000/01 season he contributed eight goals in eight games to win the KNVB Cup competition . In the penalty shoot-out in the final against PSV Eindhoven on May 24, 2001 - even after extra time it had not seen any goals - he was the first shooter and forgave; thanks to goalkeeper Sander Boschker , who saved three consecutive penalties from PSV players, Twente won the competition.
Shortly after the cup final, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink signed a contract with PSV. Eindhoven brought him for a transfer fee of 11 million euros to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy . In his first season for PSV, he scored 22 goals in 34 games and reached the round of 16 of the UEFA Cup . In 2002/03 he won the Dutch championship title with PSV Eindhoven, but only scored 8 goals. Also in 2003/04 he was able to achieve only 12 goals in the entire season; PSV then advised him to look for another club. However, it stayed and returned to its old form in 2004/05. As the Netherlands' top scorer (19 goals in 28 games), he led PSV to the league title, won the Dutch Cup and advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League .
At the beginning of the 2006 season, the Scottish club Celtic Glasgow took him under contract for three years. The first two seasons at Celtic were very successful for him and the club, with Celtic becoming champions in both seasons. The 2008/09 season was disappointing for him. On the one hand, he scored only a few goals due to a long injury, on the other hand, the championship title was missed. At the end of the season, his contract ran out. In August 2009 he was still looking for a club and kept fit with his old club, FC Twente. He had rejected an offer from the French first division partner AS Saint-Étienne .
In early September 2009, he moved to Hull City , but could not build on his earlier successes. On August 30, 2010, shortly before the end of the transfer, he signed a two-year contract with the Austrian club SK Rapid Vienna . But the mutually high expectations were not met. Vennegoor of Hesselink had only appeared 13 times and scored only four goals. On June 10, 2011, his contract was terminated. He was then back under contract from November 2011 with PSV, with whom he became KNVB Cup winner 2012 . In 17 league games he scored two goals as a substitute player for Eindhoven.
At the end of the 2011/12 season he ended his active career.
National team
He made his debut for the Dutch national football team on October 11, 2000 at the age of 21 in a game against Portugal (0-2). During the era of national coach Dick Advocaat (2002-2004) he was not called up. After a break of more than 4 years in the national team, it was used again for the first time in March 2005 . From Bondscoach Marco van Basten of 1.92 m wide and muscular striker was mainly as a joker used against defense strong teams, he said of him: "If we do not get through, we need a crowbar . Then Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink is the ideal man ”. 2006 Vennegoor of Hesselink took part in the soccer world championship; even at the EM 2008 he was part of the Elftal squad , but only came to one use.
