Matthew Scott "Matt" Besler (born February 11, 1987 in Overland Park , Kansas ) is an American football player .

college
Besler played college soccer at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend , Indiana from 2005 . With Notre Dame he was able to move into the NCAA Championship four times in a row, in 2006 and 2007 only came out in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Major League Soccer
Besler was in the MLS Super Draft 2009 in the first round by then under Kansas City Wizards occurring club drafted . He made his first appearance on March 28, 2009 against the Colorado Rapids .
In 2011 Besler was voted into the MLS All-Star Game by fan vote, in 2012 he won the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup with Sporting and was voted Defender of the Year and Team of the Year by the MLS. In the 2013 season , winning the MLS Cup also followed with Sporting Kansas City.
National team
After a brief stint in the U-20s, Besler made his debut with the national team on January 29, 2013 against Canada . Although Besler was initially not included in the team for the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2013 , he was nominated after the group stage. In the final the USA won against Panama 1-0, Besler played through from the start.
On May 22, 2014 Besler was nominated by trainer Jürgen Klinsmann in the World Cup squad for the 2014 World Cup .

His younger brother, Nick Besler , plays for the Portland Timbers .
