Wélton Araújo Melo , or Wélton for short , (born April 17, 1975 in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil ) is a Brazilian football player.

Career

Wélton began his career with Fluminense FC in 1994 . In 1995 he moved to Flamengo Rio de Janeiro . From 1996 he played in Major League Soccer at the newly founded club New England Revolution , where he was under contract for one season. On March 10, 1998, he signed a contract with Los Angeles Galaxy . In the 1999/2000 season he moved to the club Miami Fusion , in April 2001 he got a contract with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds . In 2002 he moved to the Brazilian club Paraná Clube , a year later to the Norwegian club Fredrikstad FK . At the end of his career he signed on April 4, 2004 for the season a contract with the Seattle Sounders .

In 1995 he played a game in the Brazilian national soccer team in the youth class.
