Career

Atlético Nacional and River Plate

He gained national fame when he scored the winning goal against local rivals Independiente Medellín in 1994 , which u. a. led to Nacional winning the championship. In total, the striker played 174 times for Atlético Nacional and scored 45 goals. He also finished second with the Colombians in the 1995 Copa Libertadores and won the 1997 Copa Interamericana .

It was sold to River Plate in January 1998 . In the Argentine, he should replace Hernán Crespo , who moved to Parma FC in 1996 . To show their appreciation for the Colombian, River Plate viewers often adorned themselves with angel wings.

Aston Villa

On January 12, 2001, Aston Villa secured Juan Pablo Ángel for the record transfer fee of £ 9.5 million . During his time at Villa, he was the highest paid player on the team. After a bad start with the English and private problems, he was able to develop into a leading player in the team. Ángel quickly became a fan favorite and was the team's top scorer in the 2003/2004 season. In the 2004/2005 season he could not hold this form and scored 7 goals in the Premier League . During his time at Villa he scored a total of 74 goals in 205 games ( league and cup ). Dwight Yorke is the only player to score more goals for Villa than Ángel.

New York Red Bulls

On April 17, 2007, the New York Red Bulls published that Ángel should be signed. The team's second designated player made his debut for the MLS franchise on May 8, 2007 in the US Open Cup . He was substituted on and scored a free kick in the 3-1 loss to Los Angeles Galaxy .

On May 19, 2007, he hit the goal for the first time in an MLS game. In the 4-0 win against the Columbus Crew , he prepared another goal and was instrumental in the third goal. Because of his performance in the game, he was named MLS Player of the Week. In the following games, too, he repeatedly demonstrated his ability to score goals. He was named Player of the Month in May and was also part of the squad for the MLS All-Star Game against Celtic Glasgow . In the 2-0 win, he scored the first goal for the national team and was then named player of the game. In his first season for the Red Bulls , he scored a total of 19 goals in 24 games during the regular season . In the scorers list he achieved second place behind Luciano Emilio .

Due to a nerve injury to his back, he missed the start of the 2008 season. On May 10, 2008, he scored his first goal of the season for New York. On June 5, he painfully scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Chivas USA . He then hobbled off the field. Due to the further injury, he was out of the next four games. Nevertheless, he was called up by Steve Nicol for the MLS All-Star Game against West Ham United . By the end of the season, he had scored 14 goals in 23 games.

His third season in Major League Soccer was the worst yet for the New York Red Bulls. It was clear pretty quickly that the team would not qualify for the play-offs and in the CONCACAF Champions League they were eliminated early in the group stage. Even so, Ángel had a big moment when he scored his 46th goal for the team in a game against Chivas USA on September 26, 2009. He broke the record of Clint Mathis , who scored a total of 45 goals for the MetroStars and Red Bulls. Also this season he was the team's top scorer with 12 goals.

On November 11, 2010 it was announced that Ángel would no longer play for the New York Red Bulls.

On December 15th, he was selected by the LA Galaxy . On January 19, 2011, Ángel officially moved to the Californians. He received a contract for several years and is now the third designated player at Galaxy.
