Commerce City is a city (Home Rule Municipality) in Adams County in the US state of Colorado . It is located in the Intermountain Region, part of the Rocky Mountains . According to the last census (as of 2010) the city has 45,913 inhabitants.
history
In 1859, John D. Henderson , known as Colonel Jack, built a ranch, post office and hotel on Henderson Island in the South Platte River . Today this island is part of the Adams County Regional Park and Exhibition Center. Commerce City's first facilities were cemeteries , which were built in 1876 and 1892.
In 1871 the first school was built, which is now part of Adams City High School.
In 1952 Commerce Town was united with the neighboring cities of Adams City and Rose Hill.
In April 2007 it was decided that the name Commerce City, which had been naturalized until then, should be continued as the official city name.
Industry
There are two oil refineries in the city with an output of 90,000 barrels per day. One is owned by Suncor Energy , a Canadian energy company. The other belongs to Valero Energy .
Sports
In April 2007, Dick's Sporting Goods Park was opened, a football stadium that is the home of the MLS professional football team Colorado Rapids and part of a complex with 24 football fields and buildings for the city administration. The city is also known for the greyhound dog races that take place there.
