The Valero Energy Corporation is a US-based oil company headquartered in San Antonio , Texas .
Valero Energy employs around 10,000 people worldwide (as of January 31, 2016). The company has 15 refineries in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. Valero Energy is the largest refinery owner in the United States and one of the largest gas station owners in North America.
Valero Energy is one of the largest Fortune 500 companies.
Valero Energy brands include Valero, Diamond Shamrock, Ultramar, Shamrock, Beacon and Total. While these brands are the most visible part of the company to the public, they only represent a small part of the company.
Company history
The company was founded on January 1st, 1980. Valero was previously part of Coastal Corporation .
In 1981, the company acquired a petroleum refinery in Corpus Christi , Texas and began the refinery in 1984.
In 1997 Valero Energy sold its natural gas division to Pacific Gas and Electric and focused its efforts on the oil market. Valero acquired Base Petroleum, which added four more refineries in Texas and Louisiana to the company.
In 1998 Valero Energy acquired a refinery in Paulsboro , New Jersey .
In 2005 Valero took over refinery operator Premcor.
