Carlos Manuel Hermosillo Goytortua (born August 24, 1964 in Cerro Azul , Veracruz ) is a former Mexican football player . He also played for the Mexican national soccer team . Due to its extraordinary size (1.88 m) by Mexican standards, it was often called "el grandote de Cerro Azul" (the tall one from Cerro Azul).

Life

Hermosillo started his career at Club América in the 1983-84 season. For most of his career he played in his homeland, where he also played with Monterrey , CD Cruz Azul , Necaxa , Atlante , and the Chivas . Carlos played his best seasons 1994–95 and 1995–96, in which he scored 35 and 36 goals for Cruz Azul, respectively. Hermosillo also played abroad with Standard Liège (1989-90) and in Major League Soccer with Los Angeles Galaxy . At Galaxy he made 14 goals and 15 assists.

One of the most famous moments of his career was winning the title in the 1997 winter season with CD Cruz Azul against León. In extra time he scored a golden goal penalty bleeding in the face after being brutally kicked by goalkeeper Ángel Comizzo .

Hermosillo ended his playing career in 2001.

National team

Hermosillo, along with Luis Hernández and Jared Borgetti, is one of the top scorers on the Mexican national football team with 35 goals (in 90 games between 1984 and 1997). He also took part in the 1994 World Cup, but did not score a goal.
