Matthew James Hedges (born April 1, 1990 in Rochester , New York ) is an American football player .

The defender has been playing for FC Dallas in Major League Soccer since 2012 .

Player career

Youth and college

Hedges attended Butler University in Indianapolis , Indiana from 2008 to 2010 . There he played college soccer for the college team Butler Bulldogs. In 2011 he moved to the University of North Carolina , where he played for one season for the North Carolina Tar Heels. During his time at Butler University, he was appointed to the NSCAA All-America Second Team select team. He also received the Horizon League Defender of the Year award in his first two years. In North Carolina, he was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year and was appointed to the NSCAA All-America First Team.

During his college years, he played outside of the 2010 and 2011 college seasons for the USL Premier Development League franchise Reading United AC .

FC Dallas

Hedges was selected in the first round of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft by Dallas FC. He made his debut on April 5, 2012 against the New England Revolution .

He has been the team's captain since the 2014 season and was named MLS Defender of the Year in 2016.

National team

On February 8, 2015, he made his debut for the United States national soccer team in a friendly against Panama . He was part of the team at the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup , which the USA won.
